Will Bynum released to house arrest after hit and run charge

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Will Bynum, a former Georgia Tech basketball star now playing in Israel, was released to house arrest Tuesday after being accused of running over a man after leaving a nightclub brawl.

Maccabi Tel Aviv spokesman Nitzan Seraro said Bynum was at the night spot celebrating his 25th birthday. Bynum was accosted inside the club by people who later smashed his car windows, Seraro said. The injured man, a 22-year-old disk jockey at the club, remained hospitalized Tuesday.

Bynum, who briefly played for the Golden State Warriors, will now be permitted to practice with his team and play in local games, the team said. But he is barred from leaving the country for 30 days without a special request for their overseas games.

Vonteego Cummings, another former NBA player who plays for Maccabi, was with Bynum at the nightclub and was briefly detained after the incident.

Talked to my friend in Israel. Altercation started over a girl in the club. Vonteego Cummings, Bynum, and his brother were out for Bynum's birthday. Altercation moved to the parking lot, and it's anyone's guess what happened from there. At some point, Bynum got into his car (the windows in his car had been smashed in during the altercation), drove off, and hit somebody while leaving. Hit and run carries a 3 to 20 year prision term in Israel.
