MSNBC's Chelsea comment angers Clinton

SEATTLE - A distasteful comment about Chelsea Clinton by an MSNBC anchor could imperil Hillary Rodham Clinton's participation in future presidential debates on the network, a Clinton spokesman said.

In a conference call with reporters, Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson on Friday excoriated MSNBC's David Shuster for suggesting the Clinton campaign had "pimped out" 27-year old Chelsea by having her place phone calls to celebrities and Democratic Party "superdelegates" on her mother's behalf.

Wolfson called Shuster's comment "beneath contempt" and disgusting.

"I, at this point, can't envision a scenario where we would continue to engage in debates on that network," he added.

MSNBC said Shuster, who apologized on the air for his comment, has been temporarily suspended from appearing on all NBC news broadcasts except to offer his apology.

"NBC News takes these matters seriously, and offers our sincere regrets to the Clintons for the remarks," MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said, adding the network was hopeful the debate would take place as planned.

Clinton and Obama are scheduled to participate in an MSNBC debate Feb. 26 from Ohio, which holds its primary March 4. The Clinton campaign has pushed hard for as many debates as possible with Obama, but Wolfson said the Feb. 26 debate could be jeopardized.

Wolfson pointed to what he called a pattern of tasteless comments by MSNBC anchors about the Clinton campaign. Weeks ago, "Hardball" host Chris Matthews apologized to the former first lady after suggesting her political career had been made possible by her husband's philandering.

Shuster told The Associated Press he has tried to reach Clinton to apologize.

I can see both side of the issue, I think the Clinton people are over-reacting and trying to make this to cast themselves as the "victims in the media" once more, but then again, he basically called their daughter who is harmless and benign and someone who has not uttered a peep throughout the campaign on TV, a prostitute.

what he said was out of line and he deserves his suspension. And big whoop dee doo is she had cosmetic surgery (don't know if she did or not). That's got nothing to do with a presidential race between Clinton and Obama.

Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton's Election Day visit to New Haven poll workers Tuesday prompted state election officials to caution that politicking within 75 feet of polling sites is against state law.

No formal complaint about the incident was filed, but Deputy Secretary of the State Lesley Mara e-mailed New Haven registrars to remind them of the 75-foot rule, Joseph said.

Chelsea Clinton was in Connecticut to support the presidential campaign of her mother, New. York Sen. Hillary Clinton. A call was placed to Clinton's campaign seeking comment.

Now Hillary Clinton is demanding NBC fires him. What a **** loser. Get over it Clinton. You know he didn't mean it in prostitution terms. You would think the "First Black President" would understand the hip hop connotation of the word. Someone needs to knock Hillary off her high horse.

She got her public apology, he's suspended, why is she out to ruin this guys job?

If this was flipped on Obama, and say about his wife, he would have just got the apology, and left it at that, or made it a non issue, talking about the connotation of it being not so bad, and just being a poor choice of words.

That irritates me with Clinton. Just let it go, no need to try to ruin the guy. He might go over the top here and there, but he is one of the most entertaining guys imo.

I believe his brother works for The Score in Chicago too. Their entire family are great reporters, so screw Clinton here.
