HOUSTON -- Within minutes of the Seattle SuperSonics releasing guard Brent Barry Friday, the Houston Rockets were on the phone with Barry's agent, Arn Tellem, offering a two-year deal.
"We are offering the maximum allowed on a two-year contract," said Daryl Morey, Rockets General Manager. "We are in full pursuit."
And not just in the figurative sense. The Rockets are literally going after Barry.
"Coach (Rick) Adelman and I plan to go to San Antonio and meet with Brent," Morey said. "We want to give him the full treatment."
Barry's father, Rick, played for the Rockets during the 1978-1979 season and is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. His brother, Jon, played for the Rockets for two years and is currently an NBA television analyst.
Brent Barry is a 13-year veteran. Including this season Barry played for the San Antonio Spurs for four years, helping them to two NBA titles. He was traded to Seattle Wednesday in the deal that sent Kurt Thomas to the Spurs. He was included to make the deal work financially and was released 48 hours later.
The Spurs would like to re-sign him. The Phoenix Suns, L.A. Lakers, and Boston Celtics have also expressed interest.
"We think Brent can be a key piece in our playoff run if we can get him," Morey said. "We think he can help us in a significant way."
The first day Barry can sign with any team is Tuesday.

| At this point Vujacic fills Barry's role. Dude's been automatic from downtown and plays better defense than Barry. | |

| barry doesnt just shoot. hes a playmaker and he always has been. sasha has been a great shooter so far but he does not have the championship experience barry does. also i dont think hes as funny as barry either (barry=huge locker room guy) barry would be great on the lakers.
in fact, everyone who says he just shoots probably hasnt followed his career that carefully. look at the numbers this guy put up in 01-02.
i also think hes gonna go back to the spurs. hes out with innjury so theres no reason for him to rush his decision.

| Barry can still drive to the basket at times, is an above-average ball-handler and play-maker, smart player, clutch player. Aside from shooting out to three. | |

| 3 teams are chasing Barry as of now. The Suns, Spurs, and Rockets. The Rockets and Suns have announced it and the Spurs yet to. We will find out if he goes to the Spurs if he doesn't sign with a team in the next week or two. | |

| The Spurs aren't going announce it publicly. They'll just wait 30 days and welcome Barry with open arms.
Barry knows The Spurs are still the favourites to the win the title, despite what fans of Lakers, Rockers, Suns, Mavs, Celtics, Cavs, Jazz, Pistons and Hornets may think.

| i'm surprised the pistons aren't going after him. he might have a bigger impact in the east playoffs than in the west. | |

| I think he wants to stay west as in terms of pracicality and geography, I doubt actual playing divisions have any bearing on his final destination | |

| Will the NBA try to block Barry from resigning with the Spurs after the 30 day grace period? | |

| I doubt it, there's no evidence of a side deal that breaks any rules. I certainly hope he can re-sign with the Spurs... Once he comes back healthy, The Spurs certainly can use his outside shooting.. Which means Jacque Vaughan would be the odd man out. | |
